Recommended Reading

Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn by Penny Simkin, PT, Janet Whalley, RN, BSN, and Ann Keppler, RN, MN. This book is a wonderful guide through pregnancy, birth and parenting written by local experts in the field. It covers a wide range of topics in a thoughtful and unbiased manner.

The Baby Book by William Sears, MD and Martha Sears, RN. This book covers parenting issues from birth to age two. Topics include infant/toddler development, feeding and medical screening, with a great section on breastfeeding and baby wearing. It is a stong advocate of attachment parenting. Written by a pediatrician and a lactation consultant who have eight children, this book also includes much practical advice. It has a non-alarmist approach to healthcare, helping the parents make informed decisions for themselves.

Pregnancy resources The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp. This pediatrician from Santa Monica has developed techniques for soothing a fussy baby in the first few months of life. Many of my clients report it has been a life saver!

Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. This is a comprehensive guide to fertility awareness using body temperature and cervical mucous changes and is useful for both achieving and preventing pregnancy. A wonderful resource for any woman who wants to better understand her body.

Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig. This book has been most influential in my own search for health. It emphasizes whole foods and healthy fats, with much information about how to extract the most nutrition from the meals we prepare. It covers everything from soaking grains to slow-cooking mineral-rich broth to making baby formula. I especially enjoy the excerpts from studies and other authors that line each page. Though it is inspiring, the recipes can be labor intensive.

Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child by Janet Zand, ND, LAc, Robert Rountree, MD and Rachel Walton, MSN, CRNP. An invaluable tool for any parent who is interested in managing common childhood health problems in a safe and holistic manner. Each condition is discussed with perspectives from conventional medicine, as well as treatments using nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathy, acupressure and diet. It also tells you when urgent medical care should be sought.

Vaccinations: A Thoughtful Parent's Guide by Aviva Jill Romm. This is an informative and unbiased look at a topic that is often confusing. It includes detailed discussion of the immune system, the various diseases for which we vaccinate, holistic ways of treating those diseases, and public policy. There is clear medical information with frequent citations of medical studies. This book neither advocates nor discourages vaccinations.
